Today, on March 11 at 11 a.m. a press conference took place at Slovenian Chess Federation regarding the European Individual Chess Championship (26 March – 7 April 2022, Terme Čatež).
Among the present were the president of Slovenian Chess Federation Milan Brglez, championship director Nina Rob, chairman of expert council Matjaž Mikac, vice president of Slovenian Chess Federation Darja Kapš and two of the top Slovenian chess players, IM Laura Unuk and GM Matej Šebenik.
Milan Brglez invited everyone to the upcoming championship and mentioned a charity fund has been established for the Ukrainian chess players, who cannot afford the stay during the EC.
Nina Rob presented how the championship is being organized and what challenges we are facing. She also stated that this year’s measures are not as strict, but masks will still be mandatory, when not seated.
This year has been declared the Year of Women in Chess by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). In addition to the female vice-president and the director of the EP, the main judge is wGM Ana Srebrnič. For the first time in chess history, a female arbiter will judge in absolute competition.
Brežice, where the EP is held has been declared as a European Sport Town among the smaller municipalities.
